ROBERT BALDWIN b.1468
In the Register for 1874 (vol. 38, pp. 160, 289, 372), the late Col. Joseph Lemuel Chester published an excelent paper upon the ancestry of Sylvester Baldwin of Aston Clinton, who emigrated to New England, but died on the voyage, but who's
widow and childen settled in Connecticut.

Col. Chester commences his pedigree with two brothers Richard of Dundridge in Aston Clinton, the testator of 1553, from whom the Connecticut family descended; and John of Hayle in Wendover, the testator of 1565. At the time Colonel Chester
wrote, the Chesham Manor Court Rolls, in which parish Richard held a farm called Dongrove, were not available, but they have recently become so.

The distinguished Bucks. antiquary, A. Vere Woodman, Esq., F.S.A., of Wing, himself a descendent of the Baldwins, has ct from the Chesham Court Rolls, which carries the descent back another generation. He writes that the Baldwins had lived for
centuries in the Chesham hamlet of Bellington and that the family can probibly be traced with
certianty to the thirteenth century.Records show that at a Court in Chesham Bury 16 April, 28 Henry VIII (1537), Robert Baldwyn had died since the last court. He held freely lands and tenements at Bellenden called Pygotts and Belchers by
fealty, suit of courd and 5d rent. The same held freelt lands and tenements at Dungrove in Botley (hamlet in Chesham) by rent of 4d. The said Robert in his life time gave by deed, shown in court, the said lands and tenements to his younger son
Richard and the said Richard, present in court, acknowledged that he held the said lands by sevices aforesaid and did fealty. At another court held 16 April, 29 Henry VIII (1538), John Baldwin is named as son and heir of Robert. In the Subsidy
of 1525, Robert Baldwin was taxed at Aston Clinton £2 in lands and £16 in goods. A note describes him as "decaid" , and his son Richard (?) paid £8 by corn and mortgage. In the same Subsidy Richard was taxed £2 in wages.
Note: The following apeared in the N.E.H.G.S. Register 1959 Vol. 113, pg. 245, written by A. Vere Woodman, F.S.A., of Wing, Bucks
"The Baldwins of Dundridge and Chesham in Co Bucks."
The Rigister for April 1884 gives an account, compiled by the late Col. Joseph L. Chester, of the descendents of Richard Baldwin of Dundridge in the hamlet of St. Leonard's in the parish of Aston Clinton, co Bucks. Since the publication of this
article early court rolls of the manor of Chesham have come to light, and, although they are very defective, it is now possible to show that Richard Baldwin's ancestors had been settled in that parish for many generations prior to the year
1500.Nothing has been found which suggests that these Baldwins were related to the well-known Sir John Baldwin, Chief Justice of the Common Pleas, who died in 1545, and who was himself the descendent of fifteenth century Aylesbury lawyers, and
the connection, if any existed, between the two families must have been remote. As the evidence is almost entirely circumstantial, consisting mainly of the continuous recurrence of the name in the records, the succesive generations have been
numbered without assuming that they are, in every instance, father and son; it is, however, certian that they are either the direct of collateral ancestors of Richard Baldwin of Dundridge.
