DEEDS
THIS APPENDIX CONTAINS AN INDEX TO ALL DEEDS FOUND IN THE RECORDS OF ISLE OF WIGHT COUNTY, VIRGINIA, PRIOR
TO 1749 (WHEN SOUTHAMPTON COUNTY WAS CREATED) BY WHICH LAND WAS CONVEYED TO ONE OR MORE SETTLERS BY THE NOTTOWAY INDIANS.
AS NOTED ON PAGE 25, SUPRA, THE NOTTOWAY INDIANS WERE FORCED ONTO TWO RESERVATIONS, ONE OF WHICH WAS A CIRCLE
SIX MILES IN DIAMETER ON THE ASSAMOOSICK BETWEEN THE BLACKWATER RIVER AND THE NOTTOWAY RIVER STRADDLING THE SURRY - ISLE OF
WIGHT LINE. THIS WAS A TRACT OF LAND WHICH HAD 32 EQUAL SIDES ACCORDING TO DENNIS HUDGINS, THE AUTHOR OF SEVERAL VOLUMES OF
CAVALIERS & PIONEERS, INFRA. THE OTHER LAY SOUTH OF THE NOTTOWAY RIVER NEAR COURTLAND.
BECAUSE OF PRESSURE
FROM THE SURROUNDING SETTLERS AND THE INABILITY OF THE NOTTOWAY TO PROPERLY MANAGE A RESERVATION, THE GENERAL ASSEMBLY AUTHORIZED
THE SALE OF THE “CIRCLE 6” RESERVATION IN 1734 AND APPOINTED JOHN SIMMONS, OF ISLE OF WIGHT COUNTY AND
THOMAS COCKE AND BENJAMIN EDWARDS OF SURRY COUNTY AS TRUSTEES TO CONSENT TO ALL SALES BY THE INDIANS AND TO ASSIST THEM IN
SUCH SALES. SIMMONS AND HIS FAMILY BECAME THE OWNER OF MUCH OF THE RESERVATION GIVING RISE TO THE NAME “SIMMONS
TOWN.“
MORE INFORMATION CAN BE OBTAINED BY READING THE DEED FROM THE CHIEF MEN OF THE NOTTOWAY AND THE
TRUSTEE DATED AUGUST 7, 1735 AND RECORDED IN THE CLERKS OFFICE OF THE CIRCUIT COURT OF ISLE OF WIGHT COUNTY IN DEED BOOK 4
